In the midst of the growing number of COVID-19 cases and limited basic human necessities for millions of Syrians, Syria Relief & Development has joined 21 fellow NGO leaders in urging the United Nations Security Council to extend the Syria cross-border resolution for a period of 12 months. Click here to read the open letter to the Security Council, compiled by InterAction.

The Security Council has until July 10 to renew the resolution, which ensures lifesaving humanitarian aid can reach over 4 million Syrian civilians living outside of the Government of Syria’s control. In the midst of the worst pandemic the world has seen in over 100 years, the UN must vote in favor of the extension to ensure millions of civilians receive aid to adequately prepare for and respond to the spread of COVID-19.

The Security Council is the only one that has the power to fill the gaps in northern Syria’s healthcare to prevent COVID-19 transmission. As humanitarian agencies struggle to scale up and respond to the global pandemic, SRD stands in solidarity to renew Resolution 2504, authorizing cross-border assistance through Bab al-Hawa and Bab al-Salam for a minimum of twelve months.

We at SRD urge the United Nations Security Council not to abandon the most vulnerable. This is a critical time for action and solidarity.
