Displaced Syrians are starving. The slew of economic, political and environmental factors have created a catastrophe – the country is on the brink of famine. Families’ livelihoods are lost after an 11-year-long crisis, food prices are at record highs due to multiple factors including the conflict in Ukraine, humanitarian funding through the UN is declining and this year Syria saw the worst drought in 70 years.
An estimated 12.4 million Syrians suffer from food insecurity. This is a 57% increase since 2019 and is the “highest number ever recorded in the history of Syria,” according to the World Food Program. Furthermore, the UN World Food Programme reports that food prices in Syria rose by 800% between 2020 – 2022.
